01/05: (Online) Intros and Overviews. Memetown.

Assigned Today

I don’t like giving homework right out of the gate, but we’ve got to do it in a class like this!

Before Thursday, please read Steven Bradley’s blog post on reading patterns and click through this prezi by Shawn Apostel. We will use these to get moving on talking about how readers and viewers interact with the work we create.

Before Friday, please watch the InDesign for COM 248 video. If you have time (or interest later on), I really recommend Adobe’s Getting Started with InDesign course.

Today’s Content

It’s the first day of class, so we will talk through some syllabus stuff, course policies, goals, etc.

It’s the first day of class, so we’ll also get to know each other. We’ll do this by playing around with one of our course policies: the Zoom video/image policy. Head to your meme-generator website of choice (if you don’t have a preference, I recommend imgflip) or your personal stockpile of memes on your hard drive (we all have one of those, right?). Find or create a meme that really exemplifies you at this moment and set that to your Zoom photo.

We’ll talk about memes as digital media and what our photo choice can tell us about the next ten weeks.

Oh, at the end of class, please remember that you’ve changed your photo.
