Book Draft 2: A clean mock-up

As a reminder, our big project for the term is the creation of a children’s story book in e-book, print-ready and animated form. We will create this document in stages, and we will craft it using Adobe Creative Cloud software. Using InDesign, Premiere, Illustrator, Photoshop and Character Animator, we will craft a library of common assets to use between these products. At the end of the term, you should feel like you are creating one or two products rather than three distinct things.

The second draft of this project will just be a cleaner mock-up of your book materials. There should be no placeholders at this point, but character models, backgrounds, text and other assets can certainly be in rough draft or sketch form.

Materials

You will need the assets you’ve been working on in our labs over the last few weeks. You will also need your group discussion space in Canvas.

Due Date

One group member must upload your work to your group discussion board by February 23. Each group member must also submit a text note declaring what work they did in this process.

What You Need to Do

Your group should consolidate your work so far into one InDesign (*indd) file. Please export that file as a PDF (Print) as well. One group member must upload both to a new thread in your group discussion board on Canvas, or you must post a OneDrive link to your files in that same space if they’re too big for a Canvas attachment. Each group member (including the person posting) should reply to this thread to say what work they contributed to the project so far.

This is effectively just a repeat of our last draft, as I am trying to check in with everyone on their larger project’s form.

Grading

This GROUP assignment is worth 10 points (remember that the course is graded out of 100). Each group member will receive the same score.

This second draft is based equality on completion and quality, along with forward movement since the last draft. The grading criteria now are all-or-nothing. I am not grading drafts on professional quality, just on whether or not you’re continuing to make progress. (As a professional note: I’ve worked on a lot of design projects that look absolutely terrible until everything finally gets piped into a finished InDesign file. I don’t expect anything to look polished here until finals week.)

If your group is having trouble getting this done, this is a great opportunity to take advantage of the course late policy and talk to me.

  • It's a book! 4

A document with multiple pages of related content and a clear narrative is worth 4 points.

  • 4

Assets or sketches that provide a clear view into what the final product will look like are worth 4 points. Assets that are very rudimentary or vague in terms of the final product’s design are worth 0 points.

  • Job's a Good'n 2

Your group will receive 2 points so long as your document shows significant change since the last draft, ideally for the better.
