Before Thursday, head to Storytime Online and watch at least three videos of children’s books. If you have any children’s books at home, maybe read a few?
Before Friday, please check out Adobe Tutorials page for Illustrator and watch the videos (about 20 minutes) for creating shapes.
Before next Monday, please check out these three things:
- Adobe Color. In particular, try the Extract Theme tool.
- Color Theory 101: Deconstructing 7 Famous Brands’ Color Palettes by Erik Devaney about color design on common websites. It’s useful for the quick overview of color language it provides.
- Parts 1, 2 and 3 of Smash Magazine’s Meaning of Color. It’s a much deeper look at the language Devaney provides.
Today’s Content
We will look at a few documents as a group and talk about the way font affects our reading.
Some key issues we’ll try to address:
- Why does everyone hate comic sans?
- Why are academic assignments always in Times New Roman?
- Why does APA want its headings styled that way?
- Why does every operating system have its own internal font?
We are starting this term with font discussions because font face tends to be one of the most innocuous parts of a document, unless its something that’s really out of place.
But, even though we don’t always consciously notice it, it affects the way we read a document, and it can affect where our attention goes on a screen.
